08. Gavan Holohan

Midfielder

Brief info

DATE OF BIRTH
15/12/91

COUNTRY
Republic of Ireland

One of the heroes of our National League Play-Off run in spring 2022, Gavan initially joined the Mariners in March of the same year on a two-year deal from Hartlepool United.

With Town trailing Notts County 1-0 in the Play-Offs, Holohan stepped up and scored an equaliser in the final minute of added time to send the game into extra time. The Mariners would go onto win that game and, well, the rest is history.

In our first season back in the EFL, Holohan was a regular and made fifty appearances in all competitions and was the goalscoring hero in our Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round victory over Premier League side Southampton with two penalties in our 2-1 victory.

Before joining Town, Holohan made ninety-four league appearances for Hartlepool United, scoring twenty goals, ahead of the switch to Blundell Park.

His earlier years saw him come through the ranks with Kilkenny City in his native Ireland before being picked up by Hull City in 2008. He went on to spend the following four years with the Tigers but failed to make an appearance ahead of being signed by Alfreton Town after his release from Hull.

Without making an appearance for them, he signed for League of Ireland side Drogheda United and enjoyed a successful campaign in the 2014 season with him making thirty-two appearances, scoring eight times.

A move to Cork City followed and, during his two year spell with them, Holohan was able to lift the FAI Cup in 2016 with him also scoring in the President of Ireland’s Cup final to help his side win 2-0.

Following his departure in 2016, he went on to have one year spells with Galway United and Waterford before returning to English football with Hartlepool.
