After coming through the youth system at Crewe Alexandra, Toby had to drop into non-league to earn regular first team action – firstly with a loan spell at Leek Town.

When he departed Crewe permanently in the summer of 2017, he signed for Nantwich Town and his form there earned him a move to Altrincham two years later. Across that spell, he made over a century of appearances and earned the captaincy, becoming one of the highest-regarded non-league defenders.

The interest from the Mariners first presented itself in January when the club narrowly missed out on bringing the 27-year-old to Blundell Park with him instead opting to sign for Rochdale.

After suffering relegation with the Greater Manchester club, the Mariners triggered a release clause in his contract to bring the defender – capable of playing in the middle or on the right – to Blundell Park.
