Géza Dávid Turi scored a spectacular goal for the Faroe Islands as the Mariners midfielder enjoyed an eventful international break in the UEFA Nations League.
Turi featured in all four of the Faroe Islands’ UEFA Nations League Group C3 fixtures, helping his country collect four points from their opening matches against Kazakhstan, Moldova and Slovakia before scoring in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Kazakhstan.
The midfielder played his part in draws against Kazakhstan and Slovakia at home, as well as the Faroe Islands’ 1-1 draw away to Moldova, before producing a memorable moment in Astana.
Faroe Islands 1-1 Kazakhstan
Turi started the Faroe Islands’ Nations League campaign as they welcomed Kazakhstan to Tórsvøllur on Saturday 26th September.
The hosts took the lead after 14 minutes when Áki Samuelsen fired into the top corner following a pass from Andrias Edmundsson. However, Kazakhstan levelled 12 minutes later, with Temirlan Erlanov heading home from a corner to ensure the sides went into half-time level.
Turi continued in midfield before being replaced by Mattias Hellisdal in the 80th minute, as the Faroe Islands began their campaign with a point.
Moldova 1-1 Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands travelled to Moldova three days later, with Turi once again named in the starting line-up.
Viljormur Davidsen gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot in the 26th minute, converting confidently to put his side in front. Turi was substituted in the 61st minute, with Petur Knudsen replacing the Mariners midfielder.
Moldova equalised through Sergiu Perciun’s superb free-kick in the 66th minute, and neither side could find a winner as the points were shared.
Faroe Islands 1-1 Slovakia
Turi started again when the Faroe Islands welcomed Slovakia to Tórsvøllur on Friday 2nd October.
The hosts fell behind in the 38th minute when Gunnar Vatnhamar inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Slovakia the advantage at the break. However, the Faroe Islands responded impressively in the second half, with Adrian Justinussen levelling the scores in the 66th minute with a fine strike from outside the penalty area.
Turi played 90 minutes and was shown a yellow card in the second half as the Faroe Islands secured another valuable point against higher-ranked opposition.
Kazakhstan 2-2 Faroe Islands
Turi saved his standout contribution for the Faroe Islands’ return fixture against Kazakhstan on Tuesday 6th October, scoring a superb long-range effort in an entertaining encounter at the Astana Arena.
Petur Knudsen opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, heading home from close range following Jóannes Bjartalíd’s cross from a corner.
The Faroe Islands doubled their advantage after 63 minutes when Turi collected the ball and fired a right-footed effort from outside the box into the top-right corner. It was a memorable moment for the Mariners midfielder, who marked his birthday with another spectacular strike.
However, the visitors’ task became more difficult when Martin Agnarsson was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 65th minute. Kazakhstan capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Sergey Maliy reducing the deficit in the 68th minute before Nuraly Alip headed home an equaliser eight minutes later.
Kazakhstan were subsequently reduced to ten men themselves when Maliy received a straight red card in the 85th minute, but neither side could find a late winner.
The draw ensured the Faroe Islands finished this block of four fixtures with four points from four matches, with Turi’s stunning strike providing a personal highlight of the international break.
Everyone at Grimsby Town congratulates Géza on his international performances.
