Iwan Morgan says Grimsby Town have shown the quality they are capable of producing after the Mariners recorded an impressive 5-2 victory over York City at Blundell Park on Saturday.

Town produced an outstanding second-half performance to secure back-to-back Sky Bet League Two victories, with Morgan among the goals as the Mariners came from behind to claim all three points in front of more than 8,000 supporters.

The forward scored his first goal from open play for the Club, adding to Andy Cook’s opener as Town went into half-time level at 2-2 before taking control after the break.

Morgan was delighted with the team’s response and felt the players delivered exactly what head coach David Artell had asked of them during the week. He also praised the impact of the substitutes, welcomed Josh Andrews getting on the scoresheet and explained the significance of scoring in front of a packed Blundell Park.

Here’s everything Iwan had to say after Saturday’s victory…

On the victory over York City

Morgan acknowledged the quality of the opposition but felt Town started positively and took the game to York from the outset. Despite falling behind during an entertaining first half, he was pleased with the way the Mariners remained on the front foot before producing an excellent second-half display.

The forward believes the performance demonstrated what the squad is capable of achieving.

“We knew coming into the game it was going to be a difficult game. They played Barnet midweek and they were unfortunate with the result, but we also knew that it’s a long journey for them to London and to come here.

“So, we took the game right to them. We started off on the front foot. Cooky with a brilliant header, and then they managed to get one goal back into the game.

“I don’t think we struggled. I think we stayed in the game, and then they got that extra goal, but we were still on the front foot.

“We managed to get into the second half and it was just unbelievable. We showed everything that the gaffer has been asking us during the week, and we’ve shown the league now what we’re capable of doing.”

On scoring his first goal from open play

Morgan was delighted to find the net in front of the Blundell Park crowd, having been waiting for his first goal from open play in a Town shirt.

The forward also took the opportunity to clarify the meaning behind his celebration during the previous week’s fixture, insisting his intention was to demonstrate his determination to keep working hard and contributing to the team.

“I’ve been waiting for that moment. I’ve been, I want to say unfortunate, but I just knew my time was going to come and just had to keep being in the right areas.

“I just want to say I didn’t mean any harm with my celebration last week, shushing the fans. I just wanted to show that I try my best every week. I don’t try to miss on purpose, and that was just to show that I’m going to keep getting them in.

“Just keep trying to perform week in, week out, so I hope no one takes it personally.”

On Town’s second-half performance

The Mariners were dominant after the interval, adding three further goals to turn an entertaining contest into a convincing victory.

Morgan explained how the players used the tactical guidance provided by Artell at half-time, while also highlighting the contribution of those introduced from the bench. He was particularly pleased to see Josh Andrews rewarded for his recent hard work with a goal of his own.

“We just had to keep taking the game to them. I think the gaffer showed us a couple of clips inside just to show how we can beat them, and he nailed spot on what he asked us to do. We nailed it.

“The players coming on as well helped us massively, bringing that energy in. And it’s lovely to see Josh Andrews getting the goal after he’s been out for a while. He fully deserves it, but the team fully deserves these three points as well.”
