Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of Hull City midfielder, Callum Jones on a short-term one-month loan deal.
The 20-year-old spent the first half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Sky Bet League One side Morecambe, where he made a total of 18 appearances in all competitions before being recalled by his parent club in January 2022.
We caught up with the young midfielder after his first training session with his new teammates at Cheapside on Friday afternoon.
“I’m hopefully coming here to play games and as the manager has told me, try and push for the play-offs by contributing what I can to the team and see what we can do together.”
Jones now joins up with his fellow Hull City teammate, Andy Smith who joined the Mariners on loan earlier in the season and managed to speak to him prior to his loan to the club.
“It was quite a quick turnaround, to be honest! It was only yesterday (Thursday) that I found out, but I spoke Andy and he said all the lads are good, he likes working with the manager and the staff and said I will like it so. Hopefully, I will bring a lot of energy, I like to get about the pitch and I want to bring some quality and maybe some creativeness but I also like to do my defensive work, put in a few tough tackles and then the creative side can come out when you win your battles”.
Paul Hurst also spoke to GTTV yesterday, explaining how the situation the Mariners find themselves in helped secure Jones’ services.
“With Arj injured at the present, it leaves us a little bit light in that area certainly, but Callum is somebody that we looked at last season and in the summer but he got his move to Morecambe and because he has also made a couple of appearances for Hull, it meant that he couldn’t go out again in the EFL, so we are fortunate in that sense.
“He has got a little bit of everything about him to be honest. I have seen him play as a number 10, which I don’t think is his best position but it shows that he is a good footballer. He can get on the ball, has got a good engine, he is competitive so he adds some real competition in an area where I feel we need it at the minute.
“Without being disrespectful to ourselves, our situation has helped us get Callum. He’s desperate to play games and I think with him playing in the 23s he is match-fit but it doesn’t compare to first-team football and speaking to him I get that from him, he wants more of an edge to the games. He was keen to join us and already in one training session, it seems like he has integrated straight into the group.”
