Sean Scannell and Emmanuel Dieseruvwe struck as Grimsby Town climbed back into the National League play-off places with an away win at Yeovil Town.

Scannell sent the Mariners on their way to victory at Huish Park when he scored his first goal for the club on nine minutes and the visitors had chances to add to their lead before half-time, with Michee Efete and Harry Clifton both going close.

Yeovil could have levelled but defender Ben Barclay’s header bounced off the outside of the post and when Dieseruvwe’s volley made it 2-0 after the break, the points were safe as Town moved up to seventh in the table.

Paul Hurst shuffled his pack by making five changes for the second of three consecutive long distance away trips for Grimsby.

That meant a first start for Dieseruvwe and a first league start of the season for Scannell, while Andy Smith, Danny Amos and Scott Burgess all came back into the XI as Shaun Pearson, Adam Crooks, Erico Sousa, Giles Coke and Tristan Abrahams made way from the team that began the defeat at Southend in midweek.

Max Crocombe continued in goal, with Efete, Smith, Luke Waterfall and Amos forming the defence.  Scannell, Callum Jones, Burgess and Clifton were the midfielders, with John McAtee lining up behind Dieseruvwe in attack.

Pearson, Sousa and Abrahams were all named on the bench, along with Jordan Maguire-Drew and Ryan Taylor.

Yeovil came into the game looking to get back on track after a poor recent run of results which left them in mid-table.

And the hosts made a fast start as they created an opportunity in the opening seconds, with Charlie Wakefield forcing Crocombe into a save after cutting in from the right.

A cross from Clifton was cleared as the Mariners attacked for the first time, before a ball into the box by McAtee narrowly failed to find Dieseruvwe.

Town took the lead with an early goal when a patient build-up led to SCANNELL getting the ball on the right.  He twisted and turned as he made his way into the penalty area before beating home keeper Grant Smith with a shot which rolled into the bottom corner of the net.

A Yeovil free kick was half-cleared as they looked to respond, with Lawson D’Ath eventually shooting at Crocombe.

Former Scunthorpe striker Olufela Olomola fired over the bar from distance soon afterwards, before McAtee aimed to play Dieseruvwe in but his diagonal pass was too strong.

A shot from Dale Gorman was blocked by Smith, then a cross was also dealt with by the Hull City loanee at the expense of the game’s first corner.

McAtee was sent through by Jones on 19 minutes and went down under a challenge just inside the box but the referee ruled the tackle was a fair one and waved play on.

Efete made a clearance after Matt Worthington played the ball through towards Olomola, as the home side continued to look for an equaliser.

And they had another chance when a cross found its way through to Olomola, although he headed wide of Crocombe’s target.

The Yeovil pressure continued with a corner on 29 minutes, which Waterfall headed behind for another one.  This time, Crocombe punched clear and after D’Ath volleyed it back, the clearance was completed.

Town could have doubled their advantage on 33 minutes when a good move led to a chance for Efete but he could only hit the side-netting.

Another opportunity came seconds later when McAtee found Scannell on the right.  He crossed for Clifton but the shot was blocked by Smith.

A Yeovil corner came at the other end on 38 minutes and it turned into another, which eventually fell for Crocombe after the ball from the flag had been met by D’Ath.

The hosts won a sixth corner two minutes later following good defending by Amos and this time, it led to Barclay hitting the outside of the post with a header after the ball was played back in when Town were unable to fully clear their lines.

Two added minutes were played at the end of the half and a chip from Gorman was comfortably dealt with by Crocombe as Yeovil looked for a leveller before the break.

But it was not to come as the Mariners held firm to ensure Scannell’s goal remained the difference between the two sides at the halfway point.

No changes were made before the restart and the first chance of the second half went to the visitors, as Clifton’s left-footed shot was saved by Smith.  Josh Staunton got to the rebound ahead of McAtee and cleared the danger.

Crocombe got to a cross ahead of Olomola at the other end, before a home free-kick from the halfway line was headed clear.

Town won their first corner of the afternoon on 58 minutes and it led to their second goal, as the ball from the flag found DIESERUVWE on the edge of the six-yard box and he volleyed it down into the net.

Yeovil captain Luke Wilkinson was booked before Scannell hit a dipping shot which went just over the bar after he was found by McAtee.

Tom Knowles and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton replaced Gorman and D’Ath on 62 minutes as the hosts made a double substitution in an attempt to get back into the game.

But Town were now on top and another attack saw a McAtee shot blocked, with the Mariners pouring forward in search of a third goal.

Jordan Barnett was the third Yeovil substitute to be introduced as he replaced Wilkinson on 68 minutes.

A Town corner came soon afterwards but Amos’ ball beat everybody and went out of play for a goal kick.

Smith was forced to concede a corner at the other end soon afterwards, with Waterfall getting a vital header in to clear the danger from it.

Scannell and Jones were involved as the Mariners caused more problems in attack on 74 minutes but the hosts recovered and got the ball clear.

The offside flag went up as Yeovil looked to have created an opening moments later and another chance to create danger came with a home free-kick, although the delivery from it beat everybody.

Town’s first change came on 80 minutes and saw Sousa replace the impressive Scannell, while Taylor came on for Dieseruvwe two minutes later.

A shot by Olomola was blocked by Waterfall for a corner and the defender was there again to head Barnett’s delivery behind for another one.  Once more, Waterfall was the man to head it clear.

Abrahams was sent on in place of Jones in Grimsby’s third and final substitution with five minutes to go.

A Yeovil free-kick from halfway was met by Waterfall with a clearing header just before the game moved into five added minutes.

The home side were still looking for a way back into the contest and after Crocombe could only get fingertips to a deep cross, Waterfall made yet another vital block to deny Barnett, clear off the line and preserve Town’s clean sheet.

Crocombe was booked for time-wasting as he looked to run the clock down, before a shot by McAtee was blocked for a corner after Town had kept possession to manage the closing stages of the game.

Another corner came as the Mariners saw out the remainder of the contest to seal the points and claim a sixth win from their last eight games.

A clean sheet provided extra reward for a professional away performance in Somerset and the focus will now turn to another big game on the road when they travel to Boreham Wood on Saturday.
