Our Women’s Team continued their league campaign with a 2-1 victory at home to Lincoln United Development yesterday.
Prior to the game, a minute’s silence was held by all in attendance and poppy wreaths were laid to mark Remembrance Sunday.
The Mariners started the game well, playing some neat one and two touch football, but unfortunately the only thing missing was the final ball. However, Hayley Cox’s side still found themselves 1-0 down for the fourth game in a row in the 30th minute. Lincoln twice rattled the woodwork before a neat through ball made Town’s keeper French to rush off her line, but she was beaten to it and their striker was left with an easy finish from the cross.
Following the goal, Town camped in the Lincoln half, and got the equaliser in the 42nd minute. Great play involving almost every Town player on the pitch resulted in skipper Kim Brown finding Beth Wharton on the run who split the defence with a delightful pass to Emily Blyth who finished confidently.
The Mariners started the second half exactly how they finished the first, pinning the visitors back and dominating possession. Alisha DeJonge went close to scoring on two separate occasions but Lincoln’s goalkeeper was twice on hand to keep the scores level. Then, in the 79th minute, all of Town’s hard work paid off when Ellie Wilson grabbed the winner. Kim Brown found herself in the right-wing position and whipped in a delicious ball to Wilson to nod a glancing header into the far bottom corner.
Lincoln then went three up top and threw everything at the Mariners for the last five minutes of the game, but the defence held firm to earn a well-deserved three points and remain top of the division with their 100% record still intact.
Manager Hayley Cox said this at full-time: “We played really well today and was unlucky to go behind the way we did. But if there is one thing about this team, it’s the never say die attitude to come back when behind. Well done to Lincoln Development they made it hard for us to create the chances we wanted to, but huge credit to the girls. We got the win we deserved and continue our 100% record in the league so far.
