Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce that Academy graduate, Max Wright has committed his future to the club.
Wright has penned a new two-year contract, which will keep him at the Mariners until the summer of 2022, with the option of a further year.
Wright spoke exclusively to gtfc.co.uk moments after penning his new deal with the club. โI absolutely canโt wait to get started, Iโm a Grimsby lad and Iโve been a hardcore Mariner all my lifeโ, said Wright. โThe fans are everything to me and I want to do it for them. Although Iโve been let down at times in the past, the fans have been brilliant with me and Iโve had nothing but their support, so I want to do it for themโ.
The 2019/20 was seen as a breakthrough campaign for Max, making 29 appearances in all competitions which included numerous starts, most recently at local rivals, Scunthorpe United in our final competitive fixture of the campaign. Wright spoke about the disappointing way in which the season was curtailed, just as he felt he was making an impact. โYes it was [a disappointing way to end the season], especially because earlier on in the season, I missed 9 games from injury just at a time where I was making the starting 11 every weekโ, said Wright.
โThen the manager change situation happened and ending with the final 9 games being cancelled just at the time I was working and developing my game with the gaffer and he starts me in the local derby and I played the full 90 minutes in a role that Iโve never played before at right wing-back!โ
Despite the disappointing end to the 2019/20 season, Wright has high hopes for next season and cannot wait to get back to work with help from the Mariners fans. โI am determined to get driving and attacking at defences this seasonโ, said Wright. โThe fans are brilliant with me, the fansโ willingness to urge me on is like power behind me. I work incredibly hard and being scholared every day by the Gaffer means I aim to be the best I can be. Make no mistake, I will be giving everything. Youโve got to be ambitious and got to be positive and by that, youโve got to believe that you can make attractive performances and promotion happen.โ
It has been almost 4 months since the Mariners had a competitive fixture, something that Wright cannot wait to change. โWe all knew we loved football but WOW, how much has lockdown emphasised just how important this game is in our lives?โ mentioned Wright.
โIโm trying not to dwell on the tragic events that still exist during the pandemic, but football is important for our physical health, mental health, community spirit, friendship and all the brilliant banter that goes with it. Basically, a world without football is no world at all! Thatโs how important it is. Hopefully, weโre not too far away from being back in our black and white at BP.โ
Manager, Ian Holloway spoke to BBC Radio Humberside and Matt Dean yesterday regarding Max and his commitment to the club. โHeโs a wonderful kidโ, said Holloway. โHeโs got the heart and soul, heโs got the heart of a lion, a Grimsby lion and thatโs what I want. It gives him a chance to grow with us and he will be in my squad every week. Iโm delighted and particularly, I remember the last game we played very vividly, I was absolutely delighted with his performance, the passion he showed to wear our shirt deserved a new dealโ.
