Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce that goalkeeper, James McKeown has penned a contract extension, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2022.
The 30-year-old who has made over 400 appearances for the Mariner and joined the club back in 2011.
After a number of eye-catching and impressive performances throughout last season, McKeown picked up the club’s Player of the Year for a second consecutive year. His performances and loyalty have been rewarded this season, after being given the Captain’s armband for the 2019/20 campaign.
We spoke to McKeown this morning as the team prepare to face Morecambe for the 2019/20 curtain raiser tomorrow afternoon. “I’m just delighted to be honest”, said McKeown.
“I’ve been here such a long time, I’m really enjoying my football and training at the moment and that’s shown, as I had arguably my best season last season. Town has become home to my family and I, so it was an absolute no brainer to extend my deal.”
“I really feel like we are building as a club and I want to keep progressing as a goalkeeper. I want to achieve things on the pitch and I know that the club and all of the players and staff want to as well and I wanted to make sure that I am a part of that!”.
Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk, manager Michael Jolley spoke of his delight at McKeown extending his stay at the club. “We are delighted that James has committed his future to Grimsby Town for the next 3 years”, said Jolley.
“This extension demonstrates the commitment of both parties to work together for the long term and keep making progress. Macca proved last season what an outstanding player he is for us, so he deserves this recognition. He can now completely focus on helping the team in his new role as our Captain, as we look forward to the new season”.
