Seven days on from the beginning of our EFL Trophy campaign the Mariners are heading to South Yorkshire to face League One side Barnsley.

Saturday’s victory over Gillingham extended the Mariners unbeaten run at home in the league to four games having previously beaten Salford and drawn against AFC Wimbledon and Mansfield Town respectively.

Nial Maher and Gavan Holohan were both on target in a 2-0 win against high-flying Gillingham seeing Town up to 12th in the league table. Tomorrow night’s meeting with Barnsley will be an opportunity to pick up a first win in the EFL Trophy this season having lost to Manchester City U21s on penalties last week.

Team News

Paul Hurst will be without long term absentees Kieran Green and Charles Vernam who was confirmed to be out for a number of months last week. Otis Khan and Donnovan Wilson remain on the treatment table with both making progress in their respective recoveries but neither will be available for tomorrow night.

Barnsley

Tuesday night’s hosts come into the game having secured back-to-back wins beating Wigan Athletic and most recently Cheltenham on Saturday both by two goals to nil. Barnsley like Grimsby sit 12th placed coming into the game, league standing, however takes a back seat with the chance of stepping closer to advancing in a cup competition at stake.

Following a League One play-off final defeat last season and a losing manager Michael Duff to Swansea City the South Yorkshire side are now managed by Neil Collins who joined the club after starting his managerial career at Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Collins near two month reign at the tykes has seen his side win three times, draw once and lose twice so far in the 2023/24 Sky Bet League One campaign and are yet to feature in the EFL Trophy ahead of tomorrow night.

Previous Meetings

The two sides have met 112 times across the EFL with the first meeting coming in 1898 where Barnsley came out victorious by a solitary goal. The last time the Mariners met the Tykes was in 2004, Grimsby winning 6-1 in a League Two clash. Across the fixtures between the two sides the Mariners have won 46, drawn 26 and lost 40 times.

Referee

Ruebyn Ricardo will referee tomorrow night’s game, taking charge of his eleventh match, his first Town fixture. This campaign Ricardo has been the man in the middle on three occasions, all coming in the National League. He will be assisted by Darren Williams and Paul Newhouse.
