Grimsby travelled to Lincoln City in their second game of the Youth Alliance Cup Group Stage, a rearranged fixture which took place at Riseholme College.
Town got off to a blistering start within the first five minutes of the match, Henry Brown delivered a pin point cross which was met by the head of Cameron Garnder who steered it past the goalkeeper to give the visitors a deserved lead. Just five minutes later Town added a second as a ball bounced loose on the edge of the box, Jack Collins claimed before smashing home on the half volley from the edge of the box.
Lincoln City then started to get more of a foothold in the game and began to create more openings themselves, but Seb Auton in the Grimsby goal kept them at bay with some smart stops maintaining a clean sheet and the two-goal lead was preserved..
The second half Town started on the back foot with the hosts looking to react after falling behind in the opening 45 minutes. Lincoln won themselves a penalty and dispatched the spot kick to bring the scoreline back to 2-1. The goal gave Lincoln impetus and in turn the game then became an open affair, chances came and went at both ends with neither side registering the all important goal.
In the 78th minute two incisive forward passes from Town saw Clements on the edge of the box completely unmarked with only the keeper to beat, he applied the finishing touches to a good move cooly slotting past the keeper to make it 3-1.
Lincoln didnt give up hope and pulled another goal back late on in the game to set up a nervy final few minutes, the young mariners held onto their lead however to win the game 2-3.
Next up for Town is Hartlepool at home on Saturday 28th October, the game will be held at Bradley FDC, kick off is at 12pm.
