Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce that Charles Vernam has been awarded the Sky Bet League Two goal of the month award for August for his strike against Cheltenham Town.
Vernam scored the second goal in our 3-2 win over The Robins at Blundell Park on Saturday 17th August in our opening home fixture of the 2024-25 season.
A quick Mariner’s counter-attack gave Vernam a one-on-one outside the Cheltenham area. He took full advantage, jinking inside before letting fly with a searing shot that bent into the net.
On receiving the goal of the month award for August, Vernam said: “It’s a great feeling to win the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month award, it felt like a really good goal when I scored it.
“When you look at them back it often feels even better when you see what actually happened. Hopefully there’s more to come this season”
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman said: “There was only one thing in his mind when Vernam squared up the Cheltenham defender on the edge of the box.
“It’s easy to see it coming, but very difficult to stop, his first touch set himself perfectly and his shot gave the keeper absolutely no chance.”
Vernam beat off competition from Swindon Town’s Will Wright, Doncaster Rovers’ Jordan Gibson and Chesterfield’s James Berry.
Congratulations, Charles!
