WOMEN’S FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT | GRIMSBY TOWN 0-3 OSSETT UNITED

Our Women’s First Team’s FA Cup journey came to an end yesterday afternoon as Ossett United Women put three past the Mariners at Clee Fields.

Chloe Gray was back between the sticks and Alisha Dejonge made her first start of the 2024-25 campaign in only two changes made by Head Coach Ben Challen following last week’s narrow league defeat to Gainsborough Trinity.

The first chance of the game fell for Town, with Beth Wharton taking the ball on the spin towards the byline. She cut the ball back and was in a position to have a shot on goal, but an Ossett defender was there to clear the danger.

The visitors took the lead with four minutes on the clock and the advantage gave them the momentum they needed to keep the pressure on the home side.

A free-kick was awarded to Ossett from 40 yards out, but the effort just cleared the bar.

Wharton created a chance for herself out of nothing half way through the first-half, opening up her body and releasing a fierce shot towards goal. Unfortunately, the Ossett shot-stopper was in a position to make the save and collect the rebound.

Olivia Kershaw lofted in a free-kick for Town, but it was cleared well by the Ossett defence before a black and white shirt had a chance to connect with the ball.

Ossett doubled their advantage late on in the first-half, meaning the Mariners went into the break 2-0 down and with a big 45 minutes ahead.

Ossett got their third early on in the second-half, meaning the Mariners now had a three-goal disadvantage to work with.

A great ball from Leah Wray was met by the head of Alisha Dejonge, but her effort headed over the bar.

Chloe Gray denied Ossett a fourth goal on the 70 minute mark and lots of late changes were made to try and close the gap, but the Mariners found themselves exiting the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The Mariners are next in action as they host Sherwood at Clee Fields on Sunday.
