Preview
Next up for David Artell’s men is a home tie against Carlisle United, who currently sit bottom of Sky Bet League Two.
The Blues were relegated from League One at the end of last season, finishing bottom of the table following promotion to the third tier the previous campaign.
Over the 28 games played this season, the Cumbrian club won five, drawn six and lost seventeen. The last time Carlisle won away from home was away at Fleetwood on Saturday 25th January, so they will be keen to add more points to their tally at Blundell Park.
Artell previews the visit of Carlisle United
Carlisle are managed by 61-year-old Mark Hughes, who they appointed as their new Head Coach on Thursday following the departure of Mike Williamson. Hughes has a wealth of experience, with close to 700 games in his managerial career under his belt, with over 500 of them being in the Premier League with six different clubs, most notably Stoke City where he spent five years.
A key player for the Blues will be Joe Hugill. The 21-year-old, who joined the club in the January transfer window, is already off the mark for the Cumbrian club and scored six goals on loan at Wigan in the first half of the season. Hugill joined Manchester United as a youngster and has since experienced four loans and League One football. Hugill’s pace and power add a different dimension to Carlisle’s attacking options and they will be hoping he continues to contribute with goals and assists in their bid to stay in the football league.
In the reverse fixture at Brunton Park in September, our 3-2 win started our impressive seven-game unbeaten run on the road and was our first victory on the road this season. After finding ourselves a goal down, forward Luca Barrington found an equaliser from a Kieran Green assist. After going behind for a second time in the tie in the second-half, Lewis Cass scored our second equaliser with less than ten minutes to play and it was Harvey Rodgers who found the back of the net on the 90 minute mark to secure the Mariners the three points in front of the incredible travelling fans.
