Sophie’s Story | Unite for Access

As we look ahead to tomorrow’s designated United for Access matchday, we wanted to highlight the story of one very brave Mariner, Sophie.

Sophie is a disabled supporter of the Mariners and turned 18 today. Sophie was born with complex congenital heart disease and in her short life, she’s had to have many open-heart surgeries to prolong her life.

Sophie knows that one day, her only chance of survival will be dependent on the suitability and the availability of a transplant.

In January 2025 she underwent invasive open-heart surgery in hope of a better prognosis, to help delay the need for a transplant and aid her other organs, especially her liver, as Sophie suffers from Fontan-associated Liver disease (FALD) caused by her complex heart condition.

Sophie’s surgery was the first of its kind ever performed in the UK, and there is limited data available globally, which underscores the remarkable bravery of the young Town fan.

Sophie’s been attending Town games with her family ever since she was toddler and loves nothing more than supporting the Mariners, home and away, whilst making wonderful memories with her family.

Tomorrow will be Sophie’s first game back after her open-heart surgery and she will have the honour of walking out with the team before kick off, in front of a packed Bludell Park crowd.

From everyone at GTFC, we’d like to say a massive welcome back to Sophie and we wish you all the best as you continue to battle your condition.
