Minute’s applause for John Newman

The Mariners will hold a minute’s applause just prior to kick off tomorrow evening for our home fixture against Tranmere Rovers (8pm) in memory of former Manager, John Newman, who passed away earlier this week aged 91.

Players and staff from the Mariners will also wear black armbands for this fixture in his honour.

We would like to thank supporters in advance for helping us pay tribute to John, and ask that you allow extra time to get to your seats ahead of the applause.

Newman was in charge of the Mariners between December 1976 and July 1979, joining from Exeter City, and led the Club to promotion to the Third Division in the 1978-79 season. He left that summer to join Derby County as Assistant Manager.

He managed 137 games during his tenure, winning 60 of those – a win percentage of 43.8%. John’s own playing career as a defender totalled over 500 games, mostly for Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City.

Once a Mariner, always a Mariner.
