We are delighted to welcome former Mariner Danny Butterfield back to Blundell Park this Saturday, as he joins us as a special guest in McMenemy’s for our Sky Bet League Two fixture against Barnet.
A product of Grimsby Town’s youth system, Butterfield was born in Boston, Lincolnshire and came through the ranks at Blundell Park before making his first-team debut during the 1996-97 season. Primarily operating as a right-back but also featuring at centre-back and in midfield, Danny went on to make 147 appearances in a Town shirt, scoring four goals.
During his five years with the Mariners, Butterfield was part of a memorable era for the Club, including the historic Wembley double in 1998, lifting the Football League Trophy and winning promotion via the Second Division Play-Off Final. He also featured in the Grimsby side that famously defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the League Cup in 2001, producing a crucial goal-line clearance to keep Town level during the contest.
In 2002, Butterfield moved on to Crystal Palace, where he became a firm fans’ favourite and made over 230 appearances, including playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2004. His career also included spells with Charlton Athletic, Southampton, Bolton Wanderers, Carlisle United and Exeter City, before retiring in 2016, having amassed 569 senior appearances across the game.
Since hanging up his boots, Danny has built an extensive coaching career, holding roles with Southampton, Milton Keynes Dons, Macclesfield Town, Lincoln City and Eastleigh, among others.
Supporters attending McMenemy’s this weekend will have the opportunity to welcome Danny back to Blundell Park, reflect on his time in black and white, and hear more about his career both on and off the pitch.
