As the Mariners prepare for another trip to Rodney Parade, we take a look back at five previous encounters with Newport County – a fixture that has produced late drama, stunning strikes and memorable victories in recent years.
Newport County 0-2 Grimsby Town: 3rd September 2022
Town delivered a superb away performance to claim what was their first-ever victory at Rodney Parade. Controlling the contest for long periods, the Mariners finally made their dominance count just after the hour when Bryn Morris rifled home a brilliant 30-yard free kick for his first goal for the Club.
The points were then sealed seven minutes from time as Harry Clifton followed up his brace at Walsall the previous week by calmly finishing after driving forward from midfield. With a clean sheet secured and three consecutive league away wins achieved, it was a thoroughly professional afternoon in South Wales.
Grimsby Town 4-2 Newport County: 25th February 2020
Supporters inside Blundell Park barely had time to take their seats before Bradley Garmston fired Town ahead inside the opening minute. Newport responded through Jordan Green, but the Mariners regained the advantage before the break when Josh Benson curled a superb free kick into the corner.
James Hanson’s volley stretched the lead in the second half, although former Mariner Padraig Amond set up a nervy finish by pulling one back for the visitors. Any lingering doubts were ended when Max Wright’s deflected effort looped into the top corner, capping an entertaining six-goal contest and an excellent home victory.
Grimsby Town 1-0 Newport County: 22nd March 2025
A hard-fought afternoon at Blundell Park saw David Artell’s side return to winning ways and climb back into the Sky Bet League Two play-off places. After creating several chances before the break, the breakthrough arrived shortly after the hour.
George McEachran stepped up to take a free kick and saw his strike deflect off the wall before finding the far corner, a moment that ultimately proved decisive. Town managed the game professionally from there, securing a valuable three points in the race for the top seven.
Grimsby Town 2-1 Newport County: 16th August 2025
This meeting had everything – an early goal, a missed penalty and late, late drama. Captain Kieran Green gave the Mariners the perfect start when his header was deflected into the net inside the opening minute.
Despite Town controlling much of the game, Newport levelled through Matthew Baker after the break. But deep into added time, substitutes combined brilliantly as Evan Khouri drove a low ball across goal for Green to bundle home the winner, sparking wild celebrations and sealing another memorable afternoon.
Newport County 1-0 Grimsby Town: 6th February 2021
Not every visit to Rodney Parade has gone Town’s way, and this narrow defeat remains one that got away. The Mariners dominated large spells of the game and were handed a numerical advantage before half-time when Scot Bennett was shown a straight red card.
However, it was the hosts who found the decisive moment early in the second half, with Nicky Maynard slotting home from close range. Town pushed relentlessly for an equaliser and even struck the bar late on, but Newport held firm despite being down to ten men.
From long-range screamers to stoppage-time winners, fixtures between the Mariners and Newport County have rarely lacked excitement. With another chapter set to be written this weekend, supporters will be hoping the latest meeting delivers more moments to remember.
