Heritage Documentary Celebrating Mariners History Premieres at Blundell Park

Supporters, former players and members of the local community gathered in McMenemy’s at Blundell Park last night for the premiere of a new heritage documentary celebrating the rich history of Grimsby Town.

The special event, held as part of the club’s ongoing heritage project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, saw guests enjoy the first screening of two documentary episodes produced in partnership with Heritage TV.

The evening began with the premiere of the first 30-minute episode, which documents the story of the club from its earliest beginnings through to the modern era. Featuring rarely seen archival footage and historic imagery, the film charts the journey of Grimsby Town and the role the club has played within the community for well over a century.

Following a short break, guests then watched the second episode, a powerful film exploring the heart, history and heroes of the Mariners. Through interviews with former players, staff and supporters, the documentary highlights what it truly means to be part of Grimsby Town Football Club. The film also includes a fascinating reflection from Gary Childs on the memorable night at Luton Town and the events surrounding the well-known dressing room moment involving Brian Laws and Ivano Bonetti.

A number of former Mariners were in attendance to share their memories of representing the club, including Steve Sherwood, Dave Worthington, Alan Woodward, Terry Donovan and Brian Hill. Each reflected on their time in black and white and what playing for Grimsby Town meant to them.

The evening also included a moving contribution from May, the wife of Mariners legend Matt Tees, who spoke warmly about his time at the club and the lasting connection he had with supporters.

Among those attending were members of the newly crowned champions Grimsby Town Women, with Sophie Gray, Beth Wharton and Olivia Kershaw present to represent the side following their recent EMWR Division One North title success. After winning all 13 of their matches so far this season, the Mariners women now turn their attention to finishing the campaign strongly and maintaining their remarkable 100% record.

The event concluded with a Q&A session featuring the former players, giving supporters the chance to hear more stories from across different eras of the club’s history.

The club would like to extend its thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a special occasion, as well as to host Phillip Norton for guiding the event superbly throughout the night.

With the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project aims to preserve and celebrate the proud history of Grimsby Town Football Club, ensuring the stories of the Mariners continue to inspire future generations.
