Grimsby Town’s Youth Team fell to a 2-0 defeat against Carlisle United in their final league fixture of the season, as a young Mariners side gained valuable experience ahead of Tuesday’s North Final.
Town fielded a youthful line-up for the clash, but despite producing some promising passages of play, it was the visitors who took their chances to secure victory.
The result brings the curtain down on an outstanding league campaign for the Mariners, who finish the season as North East Youth Alliance League champions.
Across the campaign, Town amassed an impressive 59 points from 28 games, losing just three times and ultimately securing the title by a commanding 12-point margin.
While Saturday’s result didn’t go their way, it does little to detract from what has been a hugely successful season for the young Mariners, who have shown consistency, resilience and quality throughout.
Attention now turns to one final challenge, as Town take on Shrewsbury Town in the North East vs North West Final on Tuesday evening.
The match will take place at Cleethorpes Town FC, with a 7pm kick-off, as the Mariners look to cap off their title-winning campaign with another piece of silverware.
