Davis Joins The Mariners

Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce that we have secured the signing of former St Mirren defender, Harry Davis on an initial one-year-deal.

The 26-year-old helped St Mirren secure the Scottish Championship title with a 12 point cushion during the 2017/18 season, making 22 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Harry joined the Academy at Crewe Alexandra at the age of 7, spending 18 years at the club and made his professional debut for the club on the final day of the 2009/10 season in a 1-0 defeat to Bradford City at the age of 18.

After two appearances for the club in two seasons, Davis earned a regular spot in the team from the 11/12 season, making 47 appearances and scoring 5 goals in all competitions as the side earned promotion through the play-offs with a 2-0 victory at Wembley over Cheltenham.

After 208 appearances for the club, 13 goals in all competitions and a lengthy spell captaining the side, Davis made a loan move to St Mirren in January 2017, before making the move permanent in August 2017.

Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk, Davis discussed his move to The Mariners, his excitement to make the move to North East Lincolnshire and his previous experiences with the manager. “I’m delighted to be here”, said Davis. “I’m really looking forward to coming to the area, I really want to be here and I can’t wait for the season ahead.”

“I started at Crewe at the age of 7 and left at 25 so I was there for such a long time. I was a player there and the gaffer (Michael Jolley) was working in the Academy and that side of it. I didn’t see a great deal of him but he knows exactly what type of player and person I am and I know what he’s all about so that’s a great thing.”

We also spoke to manager, Michael Jolley about his latest recruit and spoke of his delight of capturing the signature of the defender. “Harry is a player I am very happy to bring to Grimsby Town”, said Jolley. “He has quality and experience which can help us improve and move forward as a team.”

“I saw Harry play many times for Crewe, during which time he got promoted from League 2 and played well over 100 games in League 1. He is a good defender who can keep and use the ball well. Harry can also score goals from set plays too. Most recently, he helped St Mirren to win promotion from the Scottish Championship.”

“Harry has shown the strength of his character in coming back from a serious knee injury and my belief is that he will bring this kind of will and determination to our dressing room. At 26, I believe his best years are ahead of him.”

“I am very happy to have secured another important player for us, so please join me in welcoming Harry to the club and give him your full support.”

With the boys reporting back to training on Wednesday 27th June, Davis is fully aware of the expectations for them on their return. “The gaffer has already spoken to us about pre-season, he wants us back fit and ready to go straight away so you’ve got to make sure you prepare yourself and make sure you’re ready for the moment you get back.”

“I know it’s the old cliché, but I honestly can’t wait to get going and meet everybody, the players, the staff, the lads and also the fans!”
