Freeview | Jake Hessenthaler: ‘I’ve Enjoyed Every Minute’

Grimsby Town midfielder Jake Hessenthaler says he’s enjoyed every minute of his ‘great’ debut season at Blundell Park.

The 25-year-old won four individual awards at Town’s annual Player of the Year awards evening on Saturday, including the official website Player of the Year gong.

And Hessenthaler, who scored one goal in 50 appearances in all competitions for Town this season, says he’s enjoyed every minute of the campaign.

Speaking exclusively on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It’s been nice to do it in my first season here. I wanted to come here and play a lot of football, and I’ve done that this year.

“I found my feet, and my position – I moved a bit further back in midfield as I went along in the season, and I’ve played there quite a lot in my career so I found it a bit more comfortable.

“But I have enjoyed every minute of it – since I turned up for pre-season to now – I’ve enjoyed every minute.

“It’s a different scenery, different change, but I did it for a reason, and it was a definite success and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

And Hessenthaler praised Town manager Michael Jolley for giving him a big responsibility, on and off the pitch, this season.

He said: “The gaffer’s been really good this year. He’s played me in 50 games, and he’s been there for me.

“He’s tried to ask for my advice, which I like – I like the responsibility, I’m 25 and I’m not a child anymore, I’m not a kid.

“And I want to be a senior player in the team and help the team and try and push forward.

“I like that responsibility, and he’s been fantastic, and it’s been an amazing year for me.”

And he also praised his Town teammates – including goalkeeper James McKeown, who won the supporters’ Player of the Year award – for their application all season long.

He said: “He (James McKeown) has been fantastic. You could see in the last game against Crewe Alexandra – they put a bit of pressure on us second half, and the wind didn’t help us.

“But some of the saves he was making were fantastic, and he’s done that all year, so he’s been an absolutely worthy winner for that.

“I’ve been professional now for six years, and they’re up there with the best I’ve worked with.

“Just coming in every day, even when we’ve had a bit of a bad run, everyone’s always working hard together – always picking each other up.

“The boys have been fantastic, and it’s been great being here so far so I’ve really enjoyed it this year.”
