Freeview | Michael Jolley Post-Crewe Alexandra Press Conference

Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley hopes the Mariners can continue to improve in Sky Bet League Two in the 2019-20 season.

Town signed off their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Crewe Alexandra at Blundell Park, thanks to first-half goals from Harry Davis and Joe Grayson.

And Jolley is now hoping his side, who finished 17th-place, can keep improving in the league next year.

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “I thought it was a win we deserved – we played well in the first half.

“We could see the wind had a big impact on the game, and clearly whoever was defending that end of the pitch struggled to get out.

“It was Crewe in the first half and I thought we pressed them well, produced some good opportunities, and scored two good goals.

“The second half was more difficult because of the wind, and Crewe are obviously a decent team, but I think overall we deserved to win the game.

“We wanted to improve on last season’s points tally, which we’ve done.

“We wanted to build the nucleus of a group that can take us forward next season, with further additions, which we’ve done.

“We’ve had some fantastic victories across the course of the season, so we’ve certainly had our share of good days.

“We’ve also had a number of defeats so we want to try and improve as we move into next season.”

Jolley highlighted Max Wright’s potential, after the Town youth academy graduate made his full EFL debut in the victory over Crewe.

He said: “He did well. He showed a couple of moments of real invention – he slid one ball through for Joe Grayson which was really good.

“He’s clearly got a lot to learn ahead of him, but we can all see his potential so a really good debut from him.”

And the Town boss also praised goalkeeper James McKeown, who made a number of good saves to keep a clean sheet over the Railwaymen.

He said: “He made some good saves. It was another fantastic performance from James, and I think he played really well, and thoroughly deserved his man of the match award.”
