Freeview | Michael Jolley Post-Newport County Press Conference

Grimsby Town boss Michael Jolley was pleased with his side’s resilience in their 3-0 Sky Bet League Two win over Newport County at Blundell Park.

Jordan Cook bagged a brace either side of the break before a late Mickey Demetriou own goal sealed all three points for the Mariners.

And Town boss Jolley praised his side for their response to Wes Thomas’ missed penalty on the brink of half time.

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It was a really good win. We weren’t happy with the start – we spoke a lot about how we wanted to start the game.

“And the first 15 minutes we didn’t really get going, and Newport were the better team.

“But then we scored, out of the blue almost, and I thought after that in the first half we were the better side, and we played some really good football.

“It was a shame on half time that we couldn’t go 2-0 (with Wes Thomas’ missed penalty), but that’s football – sometimes penalties get saved.

“But I thought the reaction to that was excellent because it would be easy to be disappointed and go negative, but we didn’t do that – we tried to step on and get more goals, and that’s how it panned out.”

And Jolley praised goalscorer Jordan Cook’s all-round performance in the victory.

He said: “I’m really pleased for Jordan because I’ve always said, and always believed, that he’s a really good player, and he can really help the team.

“He’s had his difficulties with his injuries, and one or two other things, this season, but he played really well last week and then again today.

“A hard-working performance, capped off with two excellent finishes, so a really good response from Jordan!”
