Freeview | Sam Russell: ‘I’m Ready!’

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Sam Russell says he’s ready to step in as back-up, following the club’s unsuccessful appeal of James McKeown’s red card.

McKeown will face a three-match suspension following his sending off in the 1-0 defeat to Lincoln City in the Lincolnshire Derby last weekend.

And goalkeeper coach Russell, who was brought on as a late sub to go in goal last weekend, said he’s ready to make his full Sky Bet League Two debut for the Mariners against former club Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It was great. Obviously I didn’t have time to think about it so I just put my gear on and I was straight out there. You do miss playing, and it was a positive for myself to get out there.

“It is funny – nothing ever surprises you. My role is just to have kept fit, and I’ve played a few reserve games, and I feel as good as I can.

“This match could have been against anyone – it just happens to be Forest Green Rovers, and I think the decision for Macca (James McKeown) to be sent off was harsh.

“But my role as a number two – I’ve got to be ready to step in when needed.”

And the 36-year-old, who made 203 appearances for Forest Green Rovers, has fond memories of his five years at the New Lawn.

He said: “I had a fantastic time there – I played more than 200 games there, including a promotion at Wembley and we got in the club’s history books.

“So for myself, the club, my family, and everyone involved, it was a really good time.”
