Town boss Russell Slade said that he thought his side should have been 3-0 up at the break and thought that they were denied a stonewall penalty late on in the game.
Speaking at the post match press conference, he said: “We should have won comfortably. I think if we’d gone in three-nil up at half time nobody would have complained – certainly nobody in the Colchester camp.
“Colchester upped the tempo in the second half, but the biggest decision was us not getting a penalty.
But before they did that it should have been a free-kick – their player’s taken Clarkey’s head off. The referee has missed that one.
“Charles Vernam was balled over in the box. It was a stone-wall penalty, and it was not a difficult decision for either the assistant or the referee to make.
“We deserved to win today, and the referee has denied a fantastic opportunity to get the winning goal.
“We ran the game for long periods, looked composed.
“We are pleased for Charles, getting his first goal. That is a real positive. I thought he was excellent all afternoon.”
