Green Becomes First Summer Signing

Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of former Salford City striker, Matt Green on a two-year-contract.

The 32-year-old becomes the first signing ahead of the 2019/20 season, having helped Salford City secure promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history.

Beginning his career at Newport County, Green will be known to most Mariners fans from his time at Mansfield Town, where he made 92 appearances in all competitions, scoring 56 goals in two season with the club, helping secure the National League title in the 2012-13 season.

Following his impressive spell, Green made the move to Birmingham City on a two-year deal following a trial period with the club. During his first season with the club, Green suffered a significant cruciate ligament injury which kept him out of the team for the majority of his time with the club.

Following his release from the Blues, Green returned to Mansfield Town for two seasons making 95 appearances for the club, scoring on 29 occasions. Green then made the move to local rivals, Lincoln City following their return to the Football League.

After 23 goals in 82 appearances for the Imps, Green made the move to Salford City in December 2018, helping them secure their place in Sky Bet League Two for the first time in their history with 4 goals in 21 appearances, taking his combined tally to 10 for the 2018/19 season.

Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk, manager Michael Jolley discussed his first recruit of the summer.

“I am delighted to welcome Matt to the club”, said Jolley. He will add energy and athleticism to our attack, and will compliment the other attacking players that we have. In addition, Matt has good experience that he can bring to our changing room. I am looking forward to working with Matt – welcome to Grimsby”.

iFollow Mariners spoke exclusively to Matt this afternoon about the move and his excitement regarding the move.

“It feels great to be here. It’s a big club – you realise that as soon as you walk in through the door”, said Green. “The amount of history and success the club has had over a long period of time. It’s great for me to be able to come here and play back in the Football League, and hopefully add some quality to the team.

“I like to play for clubs that are highly ambitious because I am myself, so I like to go somewhere that is fighting for promotion or a cup run. It’s all about trying to get as much success as you can as a player – especially if the manager is telling you that they’re going for it this season. He’s got a lot of experience, and he’s a good manager, and it’s something that you always want to be a part of.”

You can catch Matt’s first interview with the club exclusively on iFollow Mariners soon.
