We are delighted to confirm the signing of Charles Vernam on a three-year deal after agreeing an undisclosed fee with Lincoln City for the winger.
The 26-year-old winger joins for his second spell as a Mariner after previously being with the Club from January 2018, initially on loan, until summer 2020.
During his time at Blundell Park, Vernam made 71 league appearances, scoring eleven goals – including the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Season in the 2019-20 season for his incredible solo goal at Colchester United.
Since leaving the Club, Vernam has had spells in Sky Bet League One with Burton Albion (2020-21) and Lincoln City (2022-23) either side of a season with Bradford City.
After seeing the winger sign his contract with the Mariners, Manager Paul Hurst said:
“We’re really pleased to get Charles in. He obviously knows the Club and the fans will know, certainly a lot of them, what strengths he possesses and what I think he can bring to the squad and the team moving forward.
“He’s an attacking player, a goal threat and he takes players on. His signing means we’ve added more pace to the squad and someone we have clearly made no secret of trying to sign before, probably since I returned to the Club.
“It hasn’t happened for whatever reason, we’ve certainly come close on a few occasions but it didn’t quite happen but this summer we have finally managed to get it done.
“I’m really pleased to add another attacking player and threat to the squad.”
On his return, Vernam added: “It’s great to be back. It feels like a long time coming but yeah, I’m really happy that it’s sorted and I can’t wait to be back out there and to see some familiar faces.
“The move was close before but I think there was so many moving parts with getting here that it never quite came off but I’m incredibly grateful to the gaffer and to Joe (Hutchinson) for getting it sorted. It would have been easy for them to move onto other targets so it fills me with confidence that they wanted me back and I’m here to repay that faith.”
