Mariners International Round-Up

With two Mariners now returning from their respective travels, let’s take a look at how Géza Dávid Turi and Jude Soonsup-Bell got on during the international break.

It was Géza Dávid Turi who stole the headlines in last Friday’s must-win World Cup Qualifier tie against Group L favourite’s Croatia, who boast international pedigree throughout their side including former Ballon d’Or winner Luca Modric and Manchester City star Joško Gvardiol.

The Faroe Islands went into Friday’s game with an outside-chance of securing a place at the 2026 World Cup, for the first time in the Landsliðið’s history, if they won their game and results went in their favour elsewhere in Group L.

It was Town’s #15 that opened the scoring, much to the shock of the Croatian home crowd. Turi picked up the ball in Croatia’s half before letting fly from outside the area and, thanks to a big deflection off Tottenham Hotspur’s youngster Luka Vušković, saw the effort beat the goalkeeper and open the scoring.

Despite the positive opening 20 minutes, the 2018 World Cup finalists turned the screw and went on to win the match 3-1, with Turi netting the only goal for the Faroe Islands, topping off a memorable qualification run.

Jude Soonsup-Bell, who earlier this month formally accepted a call-up to represent Thailand, made a winning start to his time with the Changsuek, coming off the bench to make his debut in the 64th minute in a 3-2 victory over Singapore last Thursday.

He almost capped his debut off with a goal, having earned a penalty kick in the dying moments of the game but saw his effort saved.

Earlier today, our #10 came off the bench in an Asian Cup Group D Qualifier match against Sri Lanka, making an impact five minutes after entering the fray, getting on the end of a cross to nod home his first goal for his country.

He capped off a fine display by adding Thailand’s fourth goal, smashing a powerful effort into the top corner from close range.

Both internationals will now rejoin David Artell’s squad as we look to return to winning ways in Sky Bet League Two.
