Grimsby Town Women produced a thoroughly professional performance to beat reigning League Cup holders Mansfield Town Ladies 2-1 away from home on Sunday, securing their place in the second round of the East Midlands Regional Women’s League Cup.

The Mariners made a flying start in Nottinghamshire, with Milly North opening the scoring inside four minutes before Brooke Mayall doubled Town’s advantage midway through the first half.

Mansfield pulled a goal back late in the second period, but Town showed resilience to see out the victory and eliminate the cup holders.

The visitors made an immediate impact, taking the lead in the fourth minute. Alisha Dejonge won a free kick, which Town took quickly, allowing North to drive forward and find the back of the net with a well-placed finish.

Mansfield threatened an equaliser in the 12th minute, but goalkeeper Jasmin Lacey produced an excellent save to tip an effort over the crossbar. The resulting corners were dealt with by the Mariners, who continued to work hard defensively while looking dangerous going forward.

Town created further opportunities through Rowen Crawshaw, whose powerful effort forced a save from the Mansfield goalkeeper, while Beth Wharton also threatened from a short corner.

The Mariners’ positive approach was rewarded again in the 35th minute. A short free kick was worked around the Mansfield penalty area before North fed the ball into Wharton’s run. Wharton fired towards goal, and Mayall was on hand to ensure the ball crossed the line and double Town’s lead.

The visitors went into the interval with a two-goal advantage after an impressive first-half display, combining attacking quality with disciplined work off the ball to frustrate the league leaders.

Town continued to create chances after the restart as they looked to strengthen their advantage.

Abbie Emslie came close with an acrobatic bicycle kick from a corner in the 57th minute, while North headed narrowly over the crossbar from another set-piece opportunity eight minutes later.

Wharton was also denied by the Mansfield goalkeeper after a well-worked move involving Jasmin Lacey, North and Brooke Howe, as the Mariners continued to threaten.

However, the hosts gave themselves hope in the 76th minute when they scored from a corner to reduce the deficit to one goal.

With the tie finely poised, Town remained organised and determined to protect their lead during the closing stages. The Mariners made further changes as they managed the game, with Rowen Crawshaw returning to the pitch in the 81st minute before Laura Flecknor replaced Dejonge in stoppage time.

The final whistle confirmed a significant victory for Grimsby Town Women, who knocked out the reigning cup holders to progress to the second round.

North was named both Supporters’ Player of the Match and Opposition Player of the Match following her influential performance, which included the opening goal and an assist for Town’s second.

The Mariners will now look forward to the next round as they continue their League Cup campaign.
