Match preview and information: Colchester United (A)

Next up for David Artell’s men is a trip to Essex as we face in-form Colchester United under the lights of the JobServe Community Stadium.

The U’s currently reside in 8th place in the Sky Bet League Two table, just one point behind the Mariners. The Essex-based outfit were relegated to the fourth tier at the end of the 2015-16 season, after spending eight years in League One and their highest league finish since was in the 2019/20 season, where they finished in a play-off place, but subsequently lost out to Exeter City in the semi-final.

Over the 38 games played this season, Danny Cowley’s side have won 14, drawn 16 (joint most draws in the league) and lost eight. Their recent form has seen them only lose one in their last 14 outings, their most recent fixture away at Bradford City, which saw them suffer a 4-1 defeat.

David Artell previews our trip to Essex

Colchester United are coached by 46-year-old Danny Cowley, who’s been in the role since January last year and narrowly steered them away from the relegation zone, finishing 22nd on 45 points. Cowley previously managed Portsmouth in League One and his first managerial role in football saw him oversee Lincoln City’s journey back to the football league in the 2016-17 season.

A key player for the U’s will be their number ten, Jack Payne. The 30-year-old has Championship and League One experience under his belt and has not missed a single game in all competitions this season. The London-born attacking midfielder has scored 80 goals and assisted 73 times over his 12-year career. His ability to play a key pass, hold onto the ball well and ability over a dead ball makes him one of Colchester’s most dangerous attacking threats.
