Match preview and information: Crewe Alexandra (A)

Next up for David Artell’s men is a trip to Cheshire to face Crewe Alexandra under the lights in what is another huge game for the Mariners.

The Railwaymen currently reside in 9th place in the Sky Bet League Two table, four points behind the Mariners. The Cheshire-based outfit are experiencing their fourth consecutive season in the fourth tier following a second-place promotion to League One in the 2019-2020 campaign under familiar face David Artell, before relegation a couple of seasons later.

Over the 39 games played this season, Lee Bell’s side have won 14, drawn 16 (joint most draws in the league) and lost eight. Their recent form has seen them win only one game in their past six outings, most recently narrowly losing 1-0 to promotion-chasing Port Vale on Saturday.

David Artell previews our trip to Crewe

Crewe Alexandra are coached by 42-year-old Lee Bell, who’s been in charge of the Cheshire-based club since late 2022, after spells as the U18s and U23s manager as well as playing for the Railwaymen during his professional career. In his first full season in charge, he took the club to a sixth-place finish in League Two and secured them a play-off spot, where they lost out to Crawley Town in the final.

A key player for the Railwaymen will be the returning Jack Lankester, the club’s top goalscorer this campaign who joined the club from Cambridge United in the summer. The 25-year-old hasn’t featured since the middle of January because of a foot injury but returned to Crewe’s squad on Saturday and got 15 minutes under his belt. The attacking midfielder scored and assisted in the reverse meeting at Blundell Park and is a huge threat on the counter-attack, with his ability to cut inside and dribble with close ball control two major strengths of his in the final third.
