Michael Jolley Post-Crewe Alexandra Press Conference

Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley was left frustrated by his side’s 2-0 Sky Bet League Two defeat to Crewe Alexandra at Blundell Park.

Top goalscorer James Hanson had the chance to put the Mariners ahead from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, but Crewe goalkeeper Dave Richards saved it.

And the Railwaymen broke the deadlock a minute into the second half through Tom Lowery, before Charlie Kirk doubled their lead in the 91st minute.

And Town boss Jolley was disappointed with his side’s performance as they lost their first home league game of the season.

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “I don’t think we did enough in the game to deserve any points from it.

“We were below-par compared to the level of performance we have been producing.

“So it’s frustrating and disappointing that we fell below the levels that we’ve set, but I don’t think it was any lack of effort.

“I just think we made some decisions today that weren’t quite right, and key moments in the game went against us.

“We didn’t make good enough use of the ball today – we didn’t impose ourselves in the way that we have previously.

“We went a little bit too long too quickly – we’ve been mixing the game more effectively with some more passes in the middle-third.

“And maybe we were a little bit anxious. Having missed the penalty and gone behind, you become slightly anxious to get the ball forward a little bit quicker.

“So we need to learn from that and move forward.”

And Jolley backed striker James Hanson to bounce back from his penalty miss.

He said: “Of course when you get a penalty you hope that you can score it, but James Hanson’s been a fantastic player for us so far this season.

“We back him to score goals for us and on this occasion the goalkeeper saved it, but that happens in football.”

The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday as they face Macclesfield Town in round two of the Carabao Cup at Blundell Park (7.45pm).
