With the Mariners having lost their last three games, they will be eager to get back on track but face a tough test against an Exiles side that will be high on confidence.

The Welsh side upset Leeds United in the FA Cup third round at the weekend, earning them a plum fourth round tie at home to Tottenham Hotspur, so any team facing them over the next few weeks will face a group of players that will be eager to make sure they play in that fixture.

Dembele a doubt, Vernam could make debut

Siriki Dembele is an injury concern for Town after missing training all week, but Town boss Russell Slade will be eager to try and make sure the winger fit.

One player that could feature is new loan striker Charlie Vernam, who arrived from Derby County earlier in the week and will be looking to add to the side’s goal threat.

Newport will be without striker Marlon Jackson and defender Calaum Jahraldo, whilst experienced former Scunthorpe United striker Paul Hayes could make his league debut after arriving from Wycombe Wanderers.

Newport gaining momentum

Newport County are gaining momentum in League Two after a slow start and have now lost just once since the end of November.

Manager Michael Flynn took over last March with Newport 11 points from safety at the bottom of League Two, and managed to lead the club to safety on the final day of last season so is doing no harm to his reputation at all in his first senior managerial job.

The Exiles have plenty of goals in their side and have scored 35 goals so far, with striker Shawn McCoulsky, former Town forward Padraig Amond and ex-West Ham winger Frank Nouble having scored 25 of goals those between them.

A Newport win last time out

The Mariners were defeated 1-0 by Newport back in September when Padraig Amond’s goal was the difference between the two sides in a game of few chances at Rodney Parade.

Both sides have met each other 11 times over the years, with Town winning three and Newport winning four as well as the same number of draws.

The most notable clashes between the two sides took place in 2013 in the National League play-offs, when two 1-0 victories for the Exiles saw them head to Wembley and eventually win promotion.

A late Omar Bogle penalty saw the Mariners snatch a victory at Blundell Park last season.
