Referee Watch: This EFL Official Battled Coronavirus On The NHS Frontline

Tom Nield will be the man with the whistle at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The West Yorkshire official is also is a senior nurse/matron at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and has spent time on the NHS front line during the coronavirus pandemic.

Nield was appointed a National List referee in 2018 and took charge of 29 games last season – including two of Town’s games.

But, in March, when Covid-19 was at its worst, he had asked the Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL] to allow him to make a temporary permanent switch to his NHS role, until it is safe to return as a part-time referee.

He will be assisted on Saturday by Ryan Whitaker and Gareth Viccars, the Fourth Official will be Michael Chard.
