We are pleased to announce the signing of goalkeeper Jackson Smith on an emergency seven-day loan from EFL Sky Bet League One side Barnsley.
Smith joined Barnsley in July 2024 from Sky Bet League Two outfit Walsall for an undisclosed fee and arrives at Blundell Park to provide short-term cover between the sticks. The 23-year-old is a familiar face to Mariners supporters, having previously enjoyed an emergency loan spell with the Club during the 2024-25 season, when he made seven appearances and impressed with his composure and shot-stopping ability.
The young goalkeeper began his career in the youth ranks at Wolverhampton Wanderers, featuring for their senior side in the EFL Trophy, before gaining valuable experience on loan with Frickley Athletic, Kettering Town and Walsall. His time at Kettering saw him make 31 appearances during the 2021-22 campaign in the National League North, helping to accelerate his development.
After an initial loan spell with Walsall in early 2023, Smith signed permanently for the Saddlers in July of that year. He went on to establish himself as their first-choice goalkeeper and was deservedly named Young Player of the Year at Walsall’s 2023-24 end-of-season awards, following a series of assured performances in Sky Bet League Two.
Smith’s move to Barnsley saw him gain further experience at League One level, featuring regularly in matchday squads and making his senior league debut during the 2024-25 campaign. He now returns to Grimsby Town on an emergency basis and will link up immediately with David Artell’s squad, wearing the number 31 shirt.
Everyone at the Club would like to welcome Jackson back to Blundell Park and wish him every success during his loan spell with the Mariners.
