Roly Godfrey

Grimsby Town Football Club is very sad to learn of the recent passing of Roly Godfrey.

Roly was a well-known local landlord, a passionate supporter of the Mariners and, of course, the man behind the early video footage of the club from the 1980s and 90s.

He, along with cameraman Dick Dunnett, and later Martin Wilson, Graham Shearsmith and John Moore, travelled the length and breadth of the country filming games and producing the end of season highlights tapes which were so popular with fans.

Roly often featured on co-comms, describing the games he saw, and he was the person who said the line “you will not see a better goal, on any pitch, anywhere in the world” after witnessing John Cockerill’s goal against Huddersfield Town in 1990.

Roly passed away on Easter Sunday aged 84.

Our thoughts are with Roly’s family and friends at this difficult time.
