Ryan Bennett Returns to Blundell Park as Returning Legend in McMenemys

We are delighted to welcome former Mariner Ryan Bennett back to Blundell Park this Sunday, as he joins us as our returning legend in McMenemy’s for the Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie against Wolves.

Born in Orsett, Essex, Bennett arrived at Grimsby Town in 2006 after being released by Ipswich Town, quickly establishing himself as one of the Club’s brightest young prospects. Initially joining the youth setup, his impressive development saw him fast-tracked into the first team by manager Alan Buckley, making his professional debut as a late substitute in a 2-1 victory over Milton Keynes Dons in April 2007.

Just weeks later, Bennett made history by becoming the youngest captain in the Club’s history at only 17 years old, underlining the maturity and leadership qualities that would define his early career. By the start of the following season, he had cemented his place at the heart of Town’s defence, claiming the number five shirt and scoring his first senior goal on the opening day of the 2007/08 campaign against Notts County at Blundell Park.

His performances continued to draw widespread praise, earning him the Supporters’ Young Player of the Year award and a place in the side that reached the Football League Trophy Final at Wembley. Still only a teenager, Bennett’s composure on the ball, aerial presence and commanding displays made him a standout performer.

Appointed club captain again during the 2008/09 season, Bennett was ever-present in a challenging campaign and swept the board at the Club’s Player of the Year awards, collecting multiple honours including Supporters’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Young Player of the Year. His consistent form also saw him recognised nationally, winning the PFA Player of the Month award and earning international caps with England’s Under-18s.

After four impressive years with the Mariners, Bennett secured a move to Peterborough United in 2010, where his development continued and he went on to represent England at Under-21 level. A career at the very top of the game followed, with Bennett playing in the Premier League for Norwich City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City, before later joining Swansea City in 2020.

Supporters in McMenemy’s will have the opportunity to welcome Ryan back to Blundell Park, reflect on his rise from youth prospect to Premier League defender, and hear stories from a career that began right here in black and white.

Please note that hospitality packages for Sunday’s fixture are now completely sold out.
