Sky Bet League Two 2019-20 Preview: Carlisle United

Steven Pressley will be looking to guide Carlisle United into the Sky Bet League Two play-offs in the 2019-20 campaign.

Narrowly missed out on the play-offs in 2018-19

The Cumbrians finished 11th-place last season, but missed out on the play-offs by just three points.

They picked up eight wins from a run of nine league games over December and January, which left them fourth in the table – and they looked certain for a play-off spot.

But the Cumbrians won just three of their final 10 league games, and ultimately failed to make the play-offs as they finished on 68 points.

Pressley took charge of Carlisle in January, after former manager John Sheridan decided to leave Brunton Park for a second spell as Chesterfield boss.

Pressley won six of his 18 games as Carlisle manager, and his side lost 1-0 to Town at Blundell Park at the end of the campaign.

The former Coventry City, Fleetwood Town, and Falkirk boss will be hoping to guide Carlisle into the play-offs this time around.

Players

The Cumbrians released eight out-of-contract players this summer, including centre-forward Richie Bennett.

They also released Anthony Gerrard, George Glendon, Arthur Gnahoua, Peter Grant, Jason Kennedy, Gary Liddle, and Gary Miller.

The Cumbrians have already made three summer signings so far, with boss Pressley utilising the Scottish transfer market.

Right-back Christie Elliott joined from Partick Thistle and centre-half Jack Iredale made the move from Morton, while centre-back Jonathan Mellish signed from Gateshead.
