After being highly-linked with a return to Blundell Park in recent transfer windows, Charles’ finally signed a contract to come back to Blundell Park this summer when he signed a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old wide man initially came through the youth system with Scunthorpe United before moving to Derby County’s academy in 2013. Two years later, he signed a professional contract with the Rams and was promoted to their first-team squad for the 2016-17 season.

Loan spells with IBV in Iceland and Coventry City followed in 2016 and 2017, respectively, before making the move to the Mariners for the first time on loan in 2018.

The move reunited him with Russell Slade – the man who signed Vernam for Coventry – and, after sufficiently impressing during that spell, he went on to sign a two-year permanent deal the following summer with the Mariners now under the guidance of manager Michael Jolley.

He made seventy-one appearances, scoring eleven goals across those two spells with the Mariners, including a memorable effort on the road against Colchester United.

Upon leaving Blundell Park, he made the permanent move to Burton Albion on a two-year deal in July 2020 but, less than a year later, he joined Bradford City on an eighteen-month deal.

After rejecting a further deal with the Bantams, he agreed to join Lincoln City and, after a season with the Imps, he returned to Blundell Park this summer with Vernam signing a three-year deal when the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.
