The Opposition: Bury

Grimsby Town will be hoping to return to winning ways as they welcome second-placed Bury to Blundell Park in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday (3pm).

Michael Jolley’s side are without a win in five league games, but ended a run of three straight defeats as they drew 0-0 with Northampton Town last weekend.

And the Mariners will be looking to build on that draw, and break the 50-point mark in the process, with a victory over Bury this weekend.

But the high-flying Shakers are unbeaten in the league in 2019, and will be a tough nut to crack for Town on Saturday.

Last five league results

Grimsby Town: D, L, L, L, D

Bury: W, W, W, D, W

One to watch: Nicky Maynard

Experienced striker Nicky Maynard is Bury’s top goalscorer so far this season, with 18 goals in 28 league appearances.

The 32-year-old, who didn’t join the Shakers until September 28, is currently in a great run of form, after scoring five goals in his last five league games – including a 95th-minute winner in the 1-0 victory over Stevenage last time out.

The ex-Bristol City and Crewe Alexandra forward will be looking to add to his 111 career league goals as he prepares to face Town this weekend.

Previous starting XI

The Shakers have had a week’s rest as their game with Cambridge United last weekend was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Gigg Lane.

Bury boss Ryan Lowe went with a 3-5-2 formation in their 1-0 win over Stevenage at Broadhall Way last time out.

Joe Murphy was in goal, with a back three of Eoghan O’Connell, Adam Thompson, and Scott Wharton.

Nicky Adams, Jordan Rossiter, Neil Danns, Jay O’Shea, and Callum McFadzean made up the midfield, with Caolan Lavery and Nicky Maynard up front.

Last time out: Bury 4-0 Grimsby Town

It was a day to forget for Town in this fixture earlier in the season as the Mariners lost 4-0 to the Shakers at Gigg Lane back in September.

A Danny Mayor brace, a Will Aimson strike, and a Danny Collins own goal helped Bury to all three points as Town fell to a third straight league defeat.

Tickets are still available for Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two clash with the Shakers at Blundell Park.
