The Opposition: Forest Green Rovers

Grimsby Town look to bounce back from their Lincolnshire Derby defeat to Lincoln City as they face Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn in Sky Bet League Two on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Michael Jolley’s side look to get their first win of 2019 as they travel to Nailsworth for a League Two clash with seventh-place Forest Green Rovers.

Town picked up an impressive 3-0 away win at the New Lawn on the final day of the 2017-18 season, and the Mariners will be hoping for more of the same on Tuesday.

But Mark Cooper’s men lost 2-1 at home to Bury last time out, and they will be hoping to return to winning ways against Town on Tuesday.

One to watch: Christian Doidge

The striker has scored four goals in seven Sky Bet League Two appearances for Forest Green this season, and will be looking to add to that tally against Town on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old joined Bolton Wanderers on an initial loan from Forest Green on August 2018 Deadline Day, but returned to the New Lawn in January after the Championship club’s transfer embargo meant that the deal had collapsed.

The 6ft2ins forward, who scored a brace in the 4-1 opening-day win over Town at Blundell Park, returned to Forest Green’s starting XI in the 2-1 defeat to Bury last time out.

And he will be looking to get his 50th league goal for the club against the Mariners on Tuesday.

Last starting XI

Cooper opted for a 3-5-2 formation as they lost to Bury last time out, with James Montgomery in goal, and a back three of Nathan McGinley, Gavin Gunning, and Farrend Rawson.

Forest Green’s midfield five consisted of wing-backs Liam Shephard and Joseph Mills, with Carl Winchester and Lloyd James in defensive-midfield, Reece Brown as the number 10, and George Williams and Christian Doidge up front.

Last time: Grimsby Town 1-4 Forest Green Rovers

The Mariners fell to a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Mark Cooper’s men on the opening day of the season at Blundell Park, despite Mitch Rose’s first-half penalty opening the scoring.

Carl Winchester, a Danny Collins own goal, and Christian Doidge’s brace set Forest Green on their way as they started the season with a run of 12 games unbeaten in the league.

And Town will be eager to put in an improved display after the defeat earlier in the season.
