Town women just one win away from the title

Our Women’s team beat Sleaford Town 2-0 away from home to put Hayley Cox’s side just one victory away from the East Midlands Womens Division One North title.

Sleaford started the game strongly and penned Town back during the opening exchanges. But after weathering the storm, Cox’s side started to get a foothold in the game.

In the 17th minute, a lofted through ball from Danielle Brighton saw Alisha DeJonge run through and unleash a venomous volley that whistled just past the post.

At the back, Laura Ibbert and Olivia Kershaw were imperious, stifling the dangerous Sleaford attacks and keeping the league’s top scorer at bay with ease.

With the half hour approaching, the Mariners continued to turn up the pressure and went close again through Ellie Wilson after more good build up play.

Then, the pressure finally told in the 37th minute when Emily Blyth found space on the left wing and unleashed a shot that Sleaford’s keeper found too hot to handle – the on-rushing Beth Wharton fired the ball low into the bottom corner to put Town ahead.

The second half began with the home team again on the front foot but it wasn’t long before Town added another.

A pin point through ball from Kershaw allowed DeJonge to beat the offside trap and lob over the Sleaford keeper to double Town’s lead.

Dejonge continued to be a thorn in Sleaford’s side and twice rattled the post while Blyth’s attempt went narrowly over the bar.

In the end it finished 2-0 to the Mariners, with Cox’s side extending their lead at the top of the table and now only requiring one more win from their remaining three games to secure the championship.

Town Women are next in action at home to Saint Joseph’s Rockaware of Worksop Women on Sunday with a 2pm kick off.
