Travelling To Maidenhead? Everything You Need To Know!

If you’re making the journey down to Maidenhead United this weekend, Kristine Green provides you with all the information you require.

What colour kit will the team be wearing?

Blue kit for the trip to Maidenhead

What’s the ticket information?

Any tickets remaining will be available to purchase via turnstiles on the day. Both cash and card will be accepted but if you can please do order via Maidenhead directly to save time on the day.

Slightly different for the next few questions as Maidenhead based fan Mark James (@markjamestattoo) shares his knowledge.

Welcome fellow Mariners, as a Grimsby boy ‘born and bred’ now living in Maidenhead, I have been given the task of trying to provide you all with the information you need to have an enjoyable time here in SL6. I’ll try to cover the main points and apologies if I miss something.

Where will we be located?

Town fans are in the Bell Street stand and will use that entrance.

When do turnstiles open?

Turnstiles open at 1.30pm

How do I get to the ground?

Postcode for the ground is SL6 1SF

The ground (SL6 1SF) is central(ish) within the town centre and is just a few minutes from everything so when you get here, find yourself a parking space and you can easily wander around the town. I’ll give you places of where to park later. There are many different ways you can get into Maidenhead, so let’s start off with the bad news, the M4 is shut this coming weekend between Junction 6 to Junction 8/9. You can follow the diversions but due to the severe weight of traffic, expect delays.

Most importantly, try to use the M40, come off at Junction 4, go down the A404(M) and either come off at the junction for the A4 signposted Maidenhead or the roundabout for the A308 signposted Pinkneys Green or if you’ve missed these two, an exit marked as Junction 9a Cox Green/White Waltham.

If you’re coming from the South West, my suggestion is to exit at Junction 10 on the M4, travel north on the A329(M) and aim for the Bath Road/New Bath Road which is the A4 and this will bring you directly into Maidenhead.

If you are travelling from the South of England, there are options to come off at Junction 11 on the M25 and aim for Virginia Water or Junction 3 of the M3 but both routes require a good level of map reading to get you into Maidenhead but it makes it a bit more fun.

Please allow plenty of time (just in case) because when the M4 is closed, traffic can become very congested especially on the local roads.

Where is the best place to park?

There are lots of traffic wardens around the town centre so be very mindful where you park. Here is a list of car parks near to the ground:

  • Stafferton Way, SL6 1AY – A 3 minute walk to the ground. £8 daily charge
  • Nicholsons Shopping Centre, SL6 1NT – A 3 minute walk to the ground. £10 up to 5 hours
  • Braywick Park Leisure Centre, SL6 1BN – A 10 minute walk to the ground. 4 to 5 hours is £7.50. Over 5 hours is £10.00

These are the 3 main car parks in the town centre. There are mini car parks dotted around the town but parking there is purely the ‘luck of the draw’.

If you don’t mind a 10 minute walk, you can park on these roads on a Saturday and Sunday as they are permit exempt on the aforementioned days:

  • Boyn Hill Avenue, SL6 4EY
  • Boyndon Road, SL6 4EU
  • Lower Boyndon Road, SL6 4DD

What is the nearest train station to the stadium and what is the approximate distance and walking time?

Maidenhead Railway Station is on the line connected to London Paddington and trains run frequently. It’s less than half a mile from the ground, taking no more than 5 minutes to the ground and is also served by trains from Oxford and Reading.

If you want to enjoy some of the lovely villages and towns near Maidenhead, then alternatively you can get the direct train from either Marlow, Bourne End or Cookham (the line is called the Marlow Donkey). The trains run hourly on the Marlow Donkey and arrive at Maidenhead 23 mins past the hour and alternatively leave Maidenhead at 34 mins past the hour. Trust me when I say Marlow, Bourne End and Cookham are lovely places to explore, you can enjoy the River Thames and frequent all the nice establishments they have.

Alternative Travel

Boat or Submarine: I think there is mooring at Maidenhead or Taplow

Private plane or Helicopter: White Waltham airport is a 5-minute drive to the centre of Maidenhead

E-Scooter: Don’t care, don’t like them

Recommended pubs for away fans?

The following pubs are all within close proximity to the ground. As I said before, get parked up and any of these are within walking distance of each other and more importantly to the ground:

  • O’Neills, SL6 1DP (literally backs onto the ground)
  • 15 Queen Street, SL6 1NB (a personal favourite of mine)
  • The Bear (JD Wetherspoon), SL6 1QJ
  • Off The Tap, SL6 1EA
  • Coppa Club, SL6 1RR (another personal favourite of mine)
  • The Maiden’s Head, SL6 1QE
  • The Corner House Bar, SL6 1LT
  • The Lord Grenfell, SL6 1TW

As I said previously, there are pubs in Cookham, Bourne End or Marlow. If the weather is nice and you fancy sitting on The River Thames and watching the world go by, then try these following pubs:

  • The Boathouse at Boulters Lock, SL6 8PE
  • The Ferry, Cookham, SL6 9SN
  • The Bounty, Bourne End, SL8 5RG

Plus, Windsor, Henley on Thames and Marlow are all a 10-minute drive to Maidenhead. And if you want a secret place to visit, have a look around Bray which is joined onto Maidenhead, it’s beautiful

Is food available in the area?

Maidenhead has a McDonald’s and a couple of Subways in and around the town centre. Queen Street, which is near the ground has a lot of takeaways of varying types. For the kebab lovers, my favourite is Kebab Elite (SL6 1DZ).

Places like the Bear, Coppa Club, O Neills to name but a few all do food of some shape or form. And finally, Maidenhead has a lot of fantastic restaurants so if you want any recommendations, give me a shout, hopefully, I can point you in the right direction.

Where is the nearest cash machine to the Stadium?

There are a number of cash machine’s available in the town centre, which is a matter of minutes away

What food and drink are available in the concourse at the stadium?

No alcohol will be served in the ground as segregation is in place.

Food on offer inside includes pies, burgers, sausage rolls and chips.

What’s the flag policy?

Flags are allowed but must not be pitchside or covering advertising boards

Any other useful information?

Both Premier Inn (£77.50 standard room) and Travelodge (£53.99 double room) are available nearby.

Digital match programmes and team sheets will be available free of charge with details released via @MUFCYorkRoad. A limited number of printed programmes will be available on the day from their club shop – strictly on a first-come, first-served basis.
