Géza Dávid Turi says the Mariners are embracing the pressure and opportunity ahead of a huge week, as Town prepare for a pivotal Sky Bet League Two clash against Cambridge United.
The midfielder played his part in Saturday’s impressive victory over Gillingham and is determined to build on that momentum as the race for the play-offs reaches a crucial stage.
Here’s everything he had to say ahead of the trip to the Abbey Stadium…
On the mood in the camp
Turi believes the squad are in a positive place despite a demanding run of fixtures.
“I think all the team feels good,” he said.
“We’re in a good position, still with one game in hand, and that game is tomorrow against Cambridge.
“It’s a big game, but we’re ready for it.”
On the importance of the win over Gillingham
The midfielder highlighted just how significant Saturday’s result was in keeping Town firmly in the play-off picture.
“It was a big win for us,” he said.
“It keeps us believing and keeps us pushing for those play-off spots.
“Even after the defeat before that, we always believed we were still in it, but that win helped us push forward again.”
On the play-off race
With results elsewhere going in Town’s favour, Turi knows the opportunity is there to take control.
“It puts it back in our hands,” he said.
“But we know we have to do our job and keep winning games.”
On taking it one game at a time
Despite a crucial run of fixtures, Turi insists the focus remains firmly on the immediate challenge.
“Of course, we take it one game at a time,” he said.
“We know we have important games coming, but right now it’s all about Cambridge.”
On facing Cambridge United
Turi is expecting a tough test against a side chasing automatic promotion.
“They’re a very good team and they need the points as well,” he said.
“But we will fight for the points and make it hard for them.”
On the scale of the game
With both sides battling at the top end of the table, Turi recognises the significance of the occasion.
“It’s a big game for us,” he said.
“Some people might say it’s a free hit, but if we win, it helps us a lot and puts pressure on other teams.”
On the final three games
Turi is relishing the challenge of the run-in and the intensity it brings.
“It’s exciting but also tough,” he said.
“You have to be 100% or even 110% in every game because every team is fighting for something.”
On Harvey Rodgers’ recognition
Turi was full of praise for his teammate after his inclusion in the League Two Team of the Season.
“I’ve always known how good he is,” he said.
“He works so hard and fights for the team.
“I’m really pleased people are now seeing that and recognising him.”
On his own development
After adapting to English football, Turi is focused on continuing to improve his game.
“It took me some time to get used to the style here,” he said.
“I still want to improve more, score goals and be more dominant on the ball.
“I’m working on it and hopefully that will come.”
On coming close to scoring against Gillingham
The midfielder admitted he thought he might find the net on Saturday.
“I did think about shooting,” he said.
“The defender didn’t jump on me, so I went for it, but he blocked it.
“It was disappointing, but maybe next time.”
On international duty
Turi also reflected on his recent experience representing his country.
“It’s always a pleasure to play for my country,” he said.
“It was a good experience and good preparation for what’s coming in the summer.”
On the supporters
The midfielder praised the backing from the Mariners faithful, both home and away.
“The fans have been amazing,” he said.
“They always support us and you can hear them in every game.
“It helps us more than they think and gives us extra motivation.”
On the week ahead
With another huge fixture against Swindon Town to follow, Turi knows there is no time to let standards drop.
“We can’t rest after Tuesday,” he said.
“There’s another big game on Saturday, so we just have to keep pushing.”
With confidence high and everything still to play for, the Mariners head to Cambridge determined to deliver another strong performance and take a significant step in their push for promotion.
