Waterfall Pens New Deal!

Grimsby Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Luke Waterfall has penned a new two-year contract with the club, keeping him at the Mariners until the summer of 2024!

Waterfall played a pivotal role in helping the Mariners secure promotion back to the Football League, making 46 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring nine goals which included two in the Play-off Semi-final at Wrexham in a fantastic 5-4 victory. Since joining the club in the summer of 2019, Waterfall has made 115 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals.

The 31-year-old’s performances helped him secure a spot in the Vanarama National League Team of the Season, partnering new teammate Niall Maher at the heart of the defence.

Luke spoke exclusively to GTTV following his contract extension and is looking to carry last season’s success into the 22/23 campaign.

“I am absolutely delighted to spend another two years at the football club. It’s a club that’s going forward quickly with the new owners and obviously the manager, Doigy and the rest of the staff, so it was obviously a no-brainer to commit to another two years and hopefully carry on the success that we’ve just had this season.

“It was absolutely brilliant to be fair [lifting the Promotion Final trophy], a special moment. After a long, hard season, a lot of games and the manner of how we did it in the play-offs, it was sort of a bit of a relief, in the end, to get the job done and get my hands on that trophy and lift it in the air in front of the fans!”.

Manager Paul Hurst also spoke to GTTV this morning, praising the centre-back’s performances and contribution and his delight at securing his services for a further two seasons.

“I am delighted that Luke has signed back up again. He had a fantastic season, ending up captaining the side for almost all of that in fairness. We had an honest conversation before the start of last season about whether he was going to be in my plans and that’s full credit to Luke and his character, he didn’t sulk about it, he got his head down, worked hard and got his place in the team and then played more games than anyone else. He contributed massively with his goals as well and he adds another promotion to his CV and deserves the plaudits that he received throughout the season.

“We now look forward to next season and the challenge of League Two and I think Luke probably feels that he has a point to prove from how the season went at Grimsby, albeit he has played at that level and higher before. I am sure he is determined to have another good season in a higher division, against tougher opponents and his experience will help the group. He is popular in the group and he is the type of character we want at this football club so like I said, I am delighted he has signed back up with us.”
