Where all Mariners Belong: Jean’s Story

“Grimsby Town is my local club and I have never thought of supporting anyone else.”

In the third of four short episodes profiling Mariners supporters and their love of GTFC, we tell the story of Jean Houson.

Jean first started watching Town back in the early 60s when she used to stand in the corner of the Barrett’s Stand. But for the last 40 years, she’s sat in the same seat in the Main Stand, next to the tunnel and behind the dugouts. To Jean, there is no other Club she’d ever support.

“I’ve always had to travel to watch Grimsby Town. Firstly, on the Barton Supporters Coach that used to come around the villages, and then when I could drive, I used to drive to away games with my ‘Aunties’, all over the country. We even flew from Humberside airport to Reading.

“The 1980 season was the season we won the championship, and it was important to the fans the fact that lots of players were local: people like Nigel Batch, Kevin Drinkell, the Moore brothers. We could identify with them.

“I sit in the Main Stand and have done for over 40 years. It’s where we used to stand before the seats were put in. Grimsby Town is my local club and I have never thought of supporting anyone else. Some of my friends do not understand why I support them; they cannot understand why I support them; they cannot understand why I go all over the country to support them. But Grimsby Town are my Club.”
