Women’s First Team begin pre-season calendar with win

Our Women’s First Team kicked off their pre-season calendar with a 7-2 win over local side Grimsby Borough yesterday afternoon.

A seven-minute hat-trick from Alisha Dejonge was amongst the goals as Ben Thomas led his side to victory in his first game as Head Coach.

Town took the lead inside ten minutes, with prolific goalscorer Beth Wharton outpacing the Borough backline to put us in front early in the tie.

The first-half continued with both teams enjoying plenty of the ball, but it was the hosts who equalised with 40 minutes on the clock with a header at the back post.

The Mariners were back in front before the whistle blew, as a through ball from new signing Milly North allowed Lily Jacklin to slot home right before the break to give Town the advantage.

A handful of changes were made going into the final 45 and it was Borough who found the back of the net next with an equaliser just minutes into the restart.

It wasn’t long before the Mariners were ahead yet again, and this time it was Alisha Dejonge who got herself on the scoresheet. A cross-field ball from defender Liv Kershaw found the head of the forward for us to quickly retake the lead.

Kershaw and Dejonge combined again for our fourth goal of the afternoon, with Dejonge being in the right place at the right time to fire home a rebound after a shot from Kershaw was parried into her path.

Wharton got her second of the game on the hour mark and this time, Dejonge turned to the provider, as she pulled the ball back across the box for our number nine to finish.

Dejonge got her hat-trick in just seven minutes as she nestled the ball into the back of the net for Towns sixth of the game.

Town rounded off an impressive performance with a debut goal for youngster Milly North, set up by the returning Eden Pedersen, who drove forward and slotted North through.

Ben Thomas’ side are next in action on Sunday when they welcome Doncaster Belles Development to Clee Fields in a 2pm kick-off for their next pre-season friendly.
