Women’s First Team Report | Mariners Back to winning ways on Home Soil

Our Women’s First Team were back to winning ways as they put six past Arnold Eagles on home soil yesterday afternoon.

A Beth Wharton hat-trick, along with goals from Laura Flecknor, Dani Brighton and a debut goal for Alicia Davis saw the three points go to Ben Challen’s side in their penultimate fixture of the season.

Town took the lead with just five minutes on the clock, through debutant Alicia Davis, who was played through by Wharton for her first goal in black and white on her first start for the Club.

Wharton doubled the hosts’ lead as Harriet Dalton played a first-time ball through to Liv Kershaw, whose ball fell to the feet of our number nine to extend our advantage.

Wharton got her brace and her side’s third after being set up by Abbie Emslie following some superb build-up play into the final third.

The second-half continued with Town creating plenty of opportunities to increase the advantage, with Kloe Green and Kershaw both testing the visiting keeper.

Wharton sealed her hat-trick early in the second-half, rifling home a superb cross from Leah Wray on the byline.

Dani Brighton scored the fourth of the afternoon from the penalty spot after Wharton was upended inside the area and our captain made no mistake from 12-yards out as she struck the ball into the top of the net.

Flecknor scored the Mariners’ sixth, with Wharton heading into the ball into her path where she finished from close range.

The Mariners’ final game of the season is on Sunday at home to Belper Town in a 2pm kick-off.
