WOMEN’S REPORT | Mariners 0-1 Basford United

Our Women’s team fell to a 1-0 defeat against Basford United yesterday afternoon at Oasis Wintringham, despite the visitors ending proceedings with nine players on the pitch.

Coming into the fixture with a number of injury concerns, Hayley Cox’s team had seven players ruled out – most notably causing selection issues in defence.

A quick start saw the Mariners control possession in the early throes of the content, looking to advance quickly into the final third but repeatedly coming up against last-gasp defending from Basford with opportunities for Beth Wharton and Alisha DeJonge thwarted.

Heading up the other end of the pitch after dealing with Town’s early attacks, Basford scored what proved to be the only goal of the game with their first chance. After the ball was switched from left to right and taken down nicely, a cross towards the edge of the area was tidily controlled before being volleyed passed Chloe Grey to give the visitors the lead.

The Mariners were lucky to not go further behind minutes later when another switch of play caused issues before a volley went wide of the target.

Shortly before the interval, Wharton had the chance to level the scores but saw her effort – after a Danielle Brighton shot was deflected into her path – tipped over the bar by Basford’s goalkeeper.

Trailing at the break, Cox made a change ahead of the second half with Lily Jacklin replacing Evie Revell amid a change of formation, searching for a change in fortune.

The Mariners started the second half the better side, going close to an equaliser when two headers from Alisha DeJonge flashed wide along with an effort from Wharton.

Basford’s defence, though, stood firm and picked up a couple of cautions in their attempts to maintain their lead.

Going into the final ten, Town continued to push for an equaliser but the resilient defence from the visitors stood strong – but when the Basford left-back was shown a second yellow, the Mariners stood to have a one-player advantage when the red was shown in the 84th minute.

A second red was shown, this time to a Basford midfielder who was penalised for a late challenge.

Despite ending the match with two more players than the visitors, the Mariners weren’t able to equalise with DeJonge heading wide from a final attack. The last action of the afternoon saw Brighton shown a second yellow after trying to get the ball back from an opponent on an afternoon to forget for Town.
